Tariffs, geopolitical pressure and new trade agreements pushed leaders toward a more diversified model of global commerce.

What happened

Trade was one of the defining economic themes at Davos 2026. Leaders and experts described a global trading system being reshaped by geopolitical pressure, industrial policy, tariffs, supply-chain security and a renewed push for bilateral and regional agreements.

During the week, the proposed US tariffs on eight European countries linked to the Greenland dispute were dropped after talks, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed to the prospect of a major EU-India trade agreement. The recently concluded EU-Mercosur agreement was also cited as evidence that geopolitical complexity is accelerating efforts to diversify trade relationships.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of managing dependencies through diversification.

Why it mattered

The Davos message was not that globalization had ended. It was that the operating model was changing. Companies were being pushed to map dependencies, build alternative supply routes and treat geopolitical capability as part of commercial strategy.

This makes trade resilience a board-level issue rather than a narrow logistics question. The same forces shaping tariffs and industrial policy are also influencing where companies invest, manufacture and source critical inputs.

The Davos 2026 connection

This is a canonical synthesis of the distinct trade-system shift discussed across Davos 2026, rather than separate stories for every speaker who addressed the same underlying development. It maps primarily to Trade & Investment, with secondary links to Geopolitics, Countries & Diplomacy and Companies & CEOs.
